Mealtime Therapy at Motivate Kids

Mealtimes can be a source of joy, but for some children, they come with stress, worry, or frustration. At Motivate Kids, our Mealtime Therapy Program is designed to grow your confidence in finding the best strategies for you and your family!

Using the evidence-based SOS Approach to Feeding, we support children to explore, play and build a positive relationship with food — all at their own pace.

Our caring therapists will partner with your family every step of the way, ensuring strategies found extend from our kitchen to yours. If mealtimes are a challenge for your child, we’re here to help guide them toward small, meaningful steps that lead to happy, healthy mealtimes!

Mealtime Therapy at Motivate Kids can support children who:

– Avoid certain textures, colours or smells of food,
– Eat a limited diet or limited range of foods,
– Refusal to try new foods or gets stuck on eating the same foods,
– Difficulties with chewing, biting, or swallowing food,
– Feels anxious or upset during mealtimes,
– Mouths or chews non food items and/or
– Eats only in certain environments.

ABOUT MEALTIME THERAPY

Child-Centred Approach

Every child is unique. We start with each child's and family’s strengths, tailoring the approach to meet their individual needs. We build trust, empower children to problem-solve foods, and focus on family goals.

Developmental Framework

We follow a child’s natural development to teach the skills for eating. Recognising each child's neurodivergence, learning abilities, and family environment ensures that no two journeys look the same.

Skill-Building

Feeding challenges are skill-based, not behavioural. We support children to build essential eating skills (like chewing and swallowing) by working with physical, sensory, and motor challenges.

Sensory Exploration & Adaptability

Eating is the most complex sensory task. It requires all 8 sensory systems to work in collaboration and refined motor movements. We empower children to adapt new foods to fit their needs and develop confident eating in different environments (like at a friend’s house or a restaurant).

Play-Based Learning

Play is at the heart of our approach. Children explore food through curiosity and fun, with the freedom to move up and down the "steps to eating" at their own pace. No force, no pressure — just playful progress.

Continuous Learning & Advocacy

We challenge mealtime myths and educate families and communities about feeding challenges. Our approach evolves with the latest research to ensure children receive the most up-to-date support.
